How to install OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) on VMware to collect logs

1. Download Dell OpenManage Server Administrator vSphere Installation Bundle (VIB)

Download Dell OpenManage Server Administrator vSphere Installation Bundle (VIB) according to your ESXi version:

Upload VIB to Datastore

  1. Select the host and then click on the Configuration tab

  2. In the Hardware panel, select Storage

  3. Right click on datastore

  4. Select "Browse Datastore" as shown in the image (Fig.1) below:




  1. On Datastore Browser, click Upload icon and then Upload File.

  2. Browse to the VIB file and then click Open. After the conclusion, close the "Datastore Browser" window.


3. Enable SSH

  1. Select the host and then click on the Configuration tab

  2. In Software panel, select Security Profile

  3. On Services, click on Properties, which is located at right on top, as shows the image below:

  1. On the Services properties, select SSH and then click in Options...



  1. On the window SSH Options, click Start and after OK.

Note: At step 7, you will need to enable the SSH once again.

4. VIB Installation (e.g. OMSA 8.5)

  1. Access the host with root user with Putty (or any SSH client tool) 

  2. Install the VIB with the command line below:
Please check the correct path according to your installation package

esxcli software vib install -d /vmfs/volumes/[datastore_name]/OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-8.5.0-2372.VIB-ESX65i_A00.zip

If the installation succeeds, the below screen will be displayed:

Note: The host needs to be rebooted.

5. Rebooting the Host

  1. At the Hostname or IP Address click the right button and select Reboot

6. OMSA Download and Installation for Windows (Optional)

The links below provide the OpenManage version for the host.
Select the link according to the system's architecture.

System Architecture
x32 bits (OMSA 8.5) x64 bits (OMSA 9.1)
  1. After the installation, open the OpenManage Server Administrator shortcut on the desktop

Provide the IP address of the ESXi host, user (root) and password. Make sure the option "Ignore certificate warnings" was checked.

7. Collect logs with SupportAssist Enterprise

Once the VIB has been installed on the VMware server, the log collection can be started from the SupportAssist Enterprise console. 
The console needs to be installed on a different server. A virtual machine can be used for this. 

One the console is installed, the next step is to discover and add the server in the SAE console. Once this is done, the button "Start SupportAssist Collection" will be available for use.
