Uploading Files via the WordPress Dashboard

There are several different ways to go about uploading content to your wordpress, including plugins and themes. The primary methods used are FTP , Using the File Manager or as this article will explain, via the Wordpress Dashboard.

The Wordpress Dashboard allows for files to be uploaded by two separate means, that being directly into your post/page or through the media option on your dashboard.

To Upload a File Directly in Dashboard with the Flash Uploader:

  1. On the Dashboard menu, click Media and then click Add New to display theUpload New Media page.
  2. Click the Select Files button to open a dialog box.
  3. In the dialog box, select the file you want to upload
  4. When the upload is complete, a field with your file details appears. Below the field, click Save all changes

Note: If the file does not open, then the file type is not supported, the chosen format may not match the file's true format or the file may be damaged.
To select multiple files, hold down the SHIFT key (for PC users) or the COMMAND key (for Macintosh users).

If you are having issues with the flash in Wordpress with the Upload New Media option, you can use the Browser uploader as an alternative. You can find this option on the bottom of the Upload/Insert menu, it will appear as a link.

To Upload a File with the Browser Uploader :

  1. Click the Browser Uploader link.
  2. When the Browser uploader appears, click the Choose File button to display a dialog box.
  3. In the dialog box, select the file you want to upload.
  4. Click the Upload button.

A more direct mode of uploading files is directly into the post or page of your choosing. Bear in mind that this uploader is still Flash based, so if you have issues with uploading files, considering to use the Browser Uploader would be likely beneficial.

To Upload a File in a Post:

  1. On the Dashboard menu, click Posts, and then click Add New to display the 'Add New Post' page.
  2. On the Upload/Insert menu, click the icon for the type of file you want to upload and the 'Add media files from your computer' page will appear.
  3. Click the Select Files button.
  4. In the dialog box, select the file you want to upload.
  5. Click Open.
  6. When your file uploads, a field appears. At the bottom of the field, click the Insert into Post button.

To Upload a File in a Page:

  1. On the Dashboard menu, click Pages, and then click Add New to display 'Add New Page'.
  2. On the Upload/Insert menu, select the icon for the type of file you want to upload and the 'Add media files from your computer' page will appear.
  3. Click the Select Files button to open a dialogue box.
  4. In the dialog box, select the file you want to upload.
  5. Click the Open button.
  6. When the upload is complete, a field with your file appears. At the bottom of the field, click the Insert into Post button.

You can also use plugins in order to import media and files into the Wordpress upload manager, such as Add From Server, which serves as an alternative to FTP or using the File Manager. However, as always with any plugin, it would be recommended to read through the developer's instructions prior to use.
